The Gazing Ape, 20 inches X 20 inches, Acrylic on Canvas

Recently, I got a challenging commissioned order. My client gave me complete creative freedom and my task was to create anything I wanted. I have always craved such creative freedom, but it was difficult for me to accept it when I finally got it. I was stuck in a people pleasing pattern. I just wanted my client to like my art. I realised that I cannot expect my audience to connect with my art if I don’t. And I chose to paint something uncomfortable rather than something aesthetic and peaceful. After all, art is meant to be experienced rather than appreciated.

I took approximately five months to plan this and just 3 days to paint it. I came across a blog post which perfectly describes my painting process.

Think like a turtle, paint like a rabbit.

- Anne Blair Brown

I explored some interesting painting techniques. I just love those dots that I have splashed on the canvas. They add a lot of drama. I am slowly discovering my style.
